Babywearing makes life easier. Sun protection shouldn't make it harder.

Babies have delicate skin that is particularly vulnerable to UV damage, making sun protection especially important in the first year of life. For babies under six months, widespread sunscreen use isn't generally recommended, making physical protection from the sun even more important.

But staying inside isn't realistic. And when your baby is in the carrier, keeping little arms and legs protected can mean tucking in muslins, fumbling with umbrellas or avoiding the outdoors altogether.

That's exactly why we created Shady Baby.

Purpose-designed for babywearing, it slips on in seconds, stays in place and provides independently tested UPF50+ protection, so you can spend less time worrying about the sun and more time enjoying the day with your baby.

Safety First

Our Commitment to Safe Baby Wearing

While baby wearing and using the Shady Baby Cover, it is important to be mindful of your babies positioning, airway and airflow to ensure your baby’s safety. To help reduce the risks associated with baby wearing, including suffocation, we’ve ensured the Shady Baby Cover is thoughtfully designed with safety at front of mind. You’ll notice the Shady Baby doesn’t include a hood that covers your baby’s head and has a structured neckline, designed to keep the cover away from your baby’s face —this is intentional, to help keep their airways clear and ensure proper airflow at all times.

Follow the T.I.C.K.S. Guidelines

We encourage all parents to follow the T.I.C.K.S. Guidelines for safe baby wearing:

Tight: Ensure your baby is securely held close to your body to prevent slumping.

In View at All Times: You should always be able to see your baby’s face without any obstructions.

Close Enough to Kiss: Your baby should be positioned so you can easily kiss the top of their head.

Keep Chin Off Chest: Make sure there is enough space to fit a finger between your baby’s chin and chest to keep their airways open.

Supported Back: Your baby’s back should be supported in a natural position, with their tummy and chest snug against you.

Safety Tips for Baby Wearing in Warm Weather

Baby wearing in warmer weather comes with added risks of overheating. Keep these tips in mind to keep yourself and your little one cool and comfortable:

  • Choose Lightweight Layers: Dress yourself and your baby in light, breathable clothing and use a carrier made from cool, breathable fabrics.

  • Protect from the Sun: Use the Shady Baby Carrier Cover for UPF50+ sun protection and avoid direct sunlight during the middle of the day. Remember to protect exposed areas with a hat and baby-safe sunscreen if appropriate (over 6 months of age).

  • Stay Hydrated: Keep both you and your baby hydrated. If breastfeeding, ensure you are drinking plenty of water to maintain milk supply.

  • Regularly Check Your Baby: Feel the back of their neck or chest to monitor their temperature and ensure they’re not overheating.

  • Ventilation is Key: Use the Shady Baby Cover strategically to provide shade while ensuring proper airflow. Avoid completely covering your baby’s head or restricting their breathing. If the temperature is above 26 degrees, we recommend not using the Shady Baby as a pouch and keeping your babies arms and legs outside the elasticised pouch. Please see our product demonstration here.

  • Take Breaks: Give your baby regular breaks out of the carrier to cool down and stretch.

A Few More Things to Keep in Mind

  • Regularly check your baby’s position and ensure their nose and mouth are not covered by fabric, your body, or the carrier.

  • Always supervise your baby while using the Shady Baby Carrier Cover and ensure adequate airflow to minimise the risk of overheating.

  • Be mindful of your baby’s comfort and cues. If they seem too hot, reposition them or adjust your environment.

FAQs

What is the Shady Baby Cover?

The Shady Baby is an Aussie first baby carrier cover designed to protect your baby’s neck, arms and legs from the sun while babywearing. Pair with a UPF50+ hat for head to toe protection.

Made from independently tested UPF50+ rated fabric, the Shady Baby blocks more than 98% of harmful UVA and UVB rays. It is designed by an Aussie mum for outdoor loving parents, so you can adventure with your joey without worrying about the sun.

Why will I love it?

So many reasons! But here are 5 quick ones for you busy parents:

  • Easy to apply and remove and stays securely in place while you are on the move.
  • Blocks up to 98% of harmful UV rays (UPF50+) and provides continuous sun protection without reapplication.
  • The fabric is gentle on sensitive baby skin—breathable, hypoallergenic, and lightweight.
  • There is a hidden pocket for storage of essential items on the go.
  • Adds extra protection from wind, mozzies, and other outdoor irritants.
How do I use it?

We’ve kept things as simple as possible, because no parent needs extra faff.

  1. Slip the apron-style strap over your neck.
  2. Adjust the length so the structured neckline sits neatly at the top edge of your carrier.
  3. Clip the waist strap around your waist (between you and baby)

That’s it! Strap, clip, shade. To remove, just unclip, slip off, and pop it back into it’s convenient carry pouch.

Why doesn’t it have a hood to cover the head?

Short answer - safety!

Babywearing best practice recommends that baby is kept clearly in view at all times, without their head being covered or obstructed by material. This is to ensure baby’s airways are kept clear, they don’t overheat, and adequate airflow is maintained.

The Shady Baby cover was designed to solve the problem of exposed arms and legs in the carrier. We recommend pairing it with a good ol’ fashioned sun hat for head to toe protection.

Which baby carriers does the cover fit?

It’s designed to be worn over all structured carriers (inward or outward facing). It can also be used with hip carriers for sunsafe toddler wear. Think of it as your “one-cover-fits-all” parenting hack.

What extra features does it have?

  • Structured neckline → keeps airflow moving and your baby in view.
  • Hidden zip with double pocket → one small pocket for keys, headphones, or dummy, and a larger pocket that can stash a spare nappy, wipes, or a change of clothes. (Translation: ditch the bulky nappy bag for short trips.)
  • Internal pouch → tuck bub’s arms and legs in when the breeze picks up, when mozzies are buzzing, or when the temperature drops.
  • Convenient carry bag → secures to your carrier so you can easily store the Shady Baby cover for quick access when not in use.
Can I use the cover without a carrier?

Yep! It’s the cover that does more than one job (because parents don’t need more single-use baby gear).

You can also use it to:

  • Shield your baby from the sun while cuddling in your arms or carrying them to and from the car.
  • Protect your baby’s legs from the sun in the pram.
  • Cover up for sun-safe breastfeeds. The structured neckline means you can see your little one, while enjoying some privacy – how cool is that!?
What age range does it suit?

The Shady Baby is designed for newborns through to around 18 months (though this is just a guide, our 2 year old still uses it!) With three adjustable length settings, it grows with your little one from tiny squish to toddler explorer.

Does the cover stay secure while I’m moving?

Yes! Between the neck strap and waist clip, it stays snugly in place when you’re walking, wrangling a toddler, juggling a coffee, or holding onto the dog lead (or, let’s be real, all four at once).

No slipping, no flapping - just reliable shade that moves with you.

Will my baby overheat under the Shady Baby?

The Shady Baby was designed with airflow and safety front of mind:

  • The structured neckline keeps the cover lifted away from your baby’s face, allowing fresh air to circulate.
  • The cover is designed to adequately cover baby’s arms and legs while remaining open on the sides and bottom for extra airflow.
  • Our signature fabric is lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking, meaning it draws heat and moisture away from your little one’s skin rather than trapping it. You can read more about our signature fabric here

That said, Australian summers can be fierce. We always recommend doing regular checks of your baby by feeling the back of your baby’s neck or chest and keeping an eye out for signs of overheating (flushed cheeks, damp skin, fussiness). If in doubt, take a break from the cover and cool things down.

How do I adjust it to my baby's size?

Newborn - 6 months:

- Step 1: Fasten the outermost loops at the bottom corners of the cover around the innermost buttons at the centre.

- Step 2: Fasten the innermost loops at the bottom of the cover around the innermost buttons at the centre (the same buttons as Step 1).

6 - 12 months:

- Fasten the loops at the bottom of the cover around their corresponding buttons above.

12-18 months:

- leave all loops at the bottom of the cover unfastened (ie. nil adjustment)
